a) Placemat Exercise
  1. Reflect individually on Question 1: What message would you like brought back to the CESD Guiding Coalition?
  2. Update your individual responses on the placemat.
  3. Share your new data with your group.
  4. In the center of the placemat, record any new themes that emerged from the data.

1. The "Magic" Hat.
2. Go to your new group area.
3. With your new group, choose a Timer and Recorder.
4. Read the question assigned to your Driver of Change, and follow the horizontal path from your Driver of Change while you discuss your question.
5. Record your responses on the flip chart paper.
6. Tell Dot when you are done.

  • Analysis of Data
  • Analysis is used to identify overarching themes related to the questions that were discussed and the range of perspectives expressed by the participants.
  • Caution: you must record all themes...even those you don't like!

"Herding Data"


a) Analysis Process (11:00 - 12:00)


  1. Appoint one person to be the Recorder.
  2. Post your data on the wall in groups of five. Read your first group of five together.
  3. Using different coloured markers, identify commonly used words or phrases and similar concepts, to begin to colour-code themes in the data.
  4. As you are colour-coding, the Recorder will begin to capture on flip-chart paper, the themes that are emerging.
  5. Once you have finished the first set, ask Dot for the next set. Repeat this process.
  6. When you complete colour-coding the themes that are emerging from your data, review the flip-chart paper to add or consolidate the themes.

  1. Create polished flip-charts recording your themes.
  2. Go back to your raw data.
    • On your raw data circle quotes that you feel really captured themes - you want us to pay attention to this quote.
    • On another flip-chart paper record any "outlying data" (important ideas that fall outside the emerging themes) that you think the group should consider.
